Goats: Companions, not Commodities
Three new souls have recently joined us at Kalaalayam Farm, adding a few more routines to our daily life. It’s a joy to watch them constantly grazing on greens and grass. Yet, despite their feast throughout the day, they eagerly rush for the few final leaves I offer each evening, competing to grab as much as they can.
When some friends visited recently, they asked a familiar question:
"As a vegetarian family, what will you do with the goats?"
My response was simple:
"We plan to care for these innocent beings throughout their lives. If all they give us in return is manure, that’s enough to grow more food in the Farm. Raising animals doesn’t have to mean eating them... that's a misconception we’ve unfortunately been taught."
